What I've been doing instead of being dead...
So busy with work -- this is the first time since American Thanksgiving weekend that I've had more than one day off in a row (and I find I do need the two days in a row to fully decompress) but my schedule between now and Christmas has actually got better -- I'll have the next two weekends off. The time I am at work I expect to be absolutely madhouses because it's the mall. At Christmas. And we're selling caffiene. Lineups out the wazoo.

I've almost got all my cards out -- just have five or six left to do whose addresses came in after my first batch. Xmas shopping? Is coming along. Still have a few things to pick up but I'm moving along with it.

The holiday ficathons/secret santa things I'm taking part in -- one fic is over 1,000 words and stalled at the smut. My smut writing seems to be broken. :( I'll keep poking at it, but if it remains broken, there's mostly a complete story there and I can just tweak it to move the ending up before the smut. The other fic I have to do is already almost 2,000 words and probably could have at least that much again. Which, wow, is more I've written that isn't rp'ing in a while so that makes me happy. The way that fic is going, I can probably set it up as an establishy story in a series and just go back and play more in it at will. It could end up being ongoing fun.

There's a Holiday love meme happening -- my thread is here. People I know need to sign up to so I can go say anonymous nice things about them too.

Have received cards from [info]killerweasel, [info]faithfully_luna and [info]wolfshark so far, thank you all.

I keep meaning to do up the wishlist meme but yeah just haven't got around to it yet. But if anyone wants it, my amazon wishlist (amazon.ca, which is the one I keep up to date) is here. Other than that, any schmoopy fic (especially SPN) or pretty icons (especially SPN, are we sensing a trend here?) or really anything you think I'd like would be squeed over.

I still need to give my relatives a Xmas list too, I seem to be sucking at asking for things this year.

Right, off to leave some anonymous comments and then back to fic writing....

ETA: since the first love meme filled up, changed the link to my comment in the second one. Yes I am shameless enough to post my name in both.

Yet another want a card? post
So trying to get organised in the doing things for the holiday season. Went out this morning and bought cards and this means this will be the annual "leave me your address if you want a card" post.

So leave me your address in this post (comments are screened) if you want a card. Also, if you'd rather a card without any explicit Christmas imagery (ie Santa, reindeer) let me know and I'll try and send you one that's a bit more winter and a bit less Christmas.

Please don't assume I have your address because you've given it to me before. I'm woeful at keeping up with address changes plus I've transferred to a new computer since last time so I don't know how complete my backup file of addresses is.

I'll try and keep being organised and see if I can start sending them out in a reasonable time.

SPN FICLET: Everything but the kitchen sink
So as I said in my last post that I was doing mininano. And I wrote this ficlet from a prompt [info]wesleysgirl gave me a while back (ice cream). I'm unsure how good it is, it kept wandering all over as I was writing, but hey it's still fic that's finished.

''Dude, what the hell is that?'' )

Stil not dead and kickstarting the muse.
Okay, I'm just going to stop apologising at the beginning of each post for how long it's been since I posted and also stop saying I'm going to try and post more often because this year? It just doesn't seem to be in the cards.

I am reading my flist every day still and commenting here and there. Also spending copious amounts of my free time over at [info]fandom_high -- Dean's lj gets updated a lot more frequently than my real one here.

Still loving the new laptop and last weekend I finally found the CDs that had my photoshop and my premiere programs on them so I once again have icon (and other photoshoppy things) making abilities as well as finally having everything I need to vid on this computer. (I think I might still need to dl a couple of codecs, but we'll figure that out when we get there.) Currently I'm still sticking with premiere 6.0 although I do have a copy of premiere pro that I really should force myself to upgrade to eventually. But at least until I'm sure I've got everything loaded on right and all, I'm going to stick to the program I know.

As far as vid ideas go, I've got two front runners at the moment, plus the half finished Farscape vid I'd really like to finish some time this decade. Knowing me, I'm just as liable to end up vidding something that's not even on my list right now.

And in a question that might, possibly, be related to one of my vid ideas, does anyone happen to have an mp3 version of A and B by Tom McCrae they'd be willing to send me?

Writingwise, I'm not doing Nano this year. I choked badly on it last year and the thought of trying to do 2000 words a day this year had me whimpering. So, I signed up for[info]mini_nanowrimo instead. I only committed to 100 words a day, but I'm going to try to do as many as I can. So far, day one I had 350 words, day two I had 1,021 words, and day three 613, for a grand total so far of 1,984. :)

I'm enjoying it so far -- I know I can do 100 words in one sitting even if I'm having a horrible time dealing with writer's block, so I'm not straining and stressing over "OMG will I be able to make the goal today?" like I did with nano. And I find that the act of sitting down and opening a fic file to do my 100 words in often ends up making me feel like writing more. It's like knowing I can stop at any time and still have surpassed my goal makes it easier to keep going. I doubt I'm going to have 50,000 words at the end of the month, but hopefully I'll get my writing groove back and be able to keep up the writing a little every day thing.

So what did those 1,984 words get written on? It's a thing I've been working on for FH, that'll probably end up being used in the game. As such, it's probably going to have a limited audience and it's completely and totally self-indulgent. Which is actually probably the best kind of thing I can start this kind of challenge with as self indulgent things usually flow easier for me. I also hope to use this to get some more words doown on a few wips that have been languishing on my hard drive so hopefully I'll end up with some fic finished that people will actually be interested in reading.

Also, I signed up for [info]spn_holidays so should have my assignment for that later this week and hopefully if I go with a fic, I can use the mininano to work on that as well.

And that's me creatively right now. I keep meaning to do a post about what I'm watching on tv this season and how I feel about various shows (short form: am liking Heroes, am completely captivated by Pushing Daisies, I'm enjoying Sarah Jane Adventures a lot more than I ever thought I would, and Supernatural is still my show and I love pretty much every minute of it.) but I just haven't got around to it yet.

Maybe I need a "write 100 words in your journal every day" challenge to go along with the mininano. ;)

    9 days and counting...
To new SPN. It needs to be Oct 4th now. *checks watch, taps foot*

Thanks to everyone who gave me birthday wishes yesterday. :)

It was a nice quiet relaxing day. I had took it off work and went out shopping for a while. Checked out this new age shop that's downtown I had recently noticed and ended up buying a couple of crystals, a "spirit bear" amulet ([info]omphalos knows why finding this amused me), and a gorgeous journal that has this celtic style picture of horses on the cover. I liked the feel of the place very much and am happy to have a place like that in town. I expect I'll be making semi-regular trips to it.

Also I made a stop at Ben and Jerries and got a pint of sweet cream and cookies which I munched some of while watching the season premiere of Heroes. I love it when I get season premieres of favourite shows for my birthday. :)

My non-spoilery reaction? I pretty much loved the premiere. I'm still in the love to watch and will even maybe read some fanfic if it shows up on my flist, but have no plot bunnies of my own stage, but I enjoy watching immensely anyway. And I pretty much like all the characters which for such a huge ensemble cast is saying something.

Generally I will watch a show for about a season and a half before I tip fully over into fannish obsession, so we'll see what happens around Febuary with me and Heroes.

Sweet Charity has ended officially and I actually won some stuff this time! *rubs hands in fiendish fannish acquisitive glee*

I've been working on some of the prompts given to my last post and hope to actually have something to post soon.

And today is back to the grind -- I've got 3 supervisor shifts this week which we'll see how it goes. There's so much drama happening at work right now (all of it pretty much down to the fact that we have a manager that's not very good) and it's beginning to get wearing. I've given myself to the end of October to see if it settles down; if not I'll start looking for another job.

    Prompt me?
So I've been feeling that "omg gotta write something!" twitch lately. But nothing in particular is grabbing my muse so I figured I'd ask for some prompts to hopefully jumpstart it.

I'm limiting this to Supernatural this time because I'm not sure I can loosen the grip the Winchesters have on me enough to write other things. (Although xover prompts might work...)

So, throw me a prompt, a word, mood, item, whatever, along with a character or pairing and I'll see what I can come up with.

No promises to length or time to fill but I'll do my best. I just really want to get back in the swing of solo writing, so hit me with your prompts.

    Shiny!
Yeah I'm still sucking at updating. Apparently I can only do two of work, rp and update. Will try to do better, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Also will try to answer comments that I haven't yet. But first there needs to be news/squee.

So after my laptop started refusing to recognise any wireless signals (and wouldn't let me do a system restore) I took it as a Sign and decided it was time for a new laptop. I'd known it was something I'd have to do soon but I'd been procrastinating on that because I really didn't want to upgrade to Vista. But thanks to conversation at VVC, I found out that Dell was still offering XP as an option on some machines so...

Yeah, I'm typing this on my brand new Dell laptop with XP. Which does recognise my wireless signal and has a battery that lasts ages and ages.* Not to mention is four times as fast as my old one, over twice as big a HD and is thinner and lighter and just all around Squee worthy.

I still have a bunch of stuff I have to transfer over. And I have to find my cds that have premiere and photoshop on them and I still have a number of programs to dl but that's just settling in.

The one problem I'm having so far that might conceivably lead to swearing and frustrated yelling at inanimate objects is that I can't seem to get outlook express on this machine to actually connect and dl my sympatico mail. I haven't focused too much on it yet, just worked on it a few minutes here and there and then gone onto something else so I don't get frustrated, but it is something I will eventually have to fix. (It's probably something silly that I've forgot to check or something stupid, but if I can't figure it out I'll throw myself on my flist's mercy and see if someone can tell me how to fix it. And if that fails I might actually have to gulp call sympatico tech support.)

But this has been so much less stressful so far than the last time I got a new computer -- I think partially because the last time I got one on the spur when the old one broke and was going to cost over half the cost of a new one so I wasn't mentally prepared for all the hassle of transferring over. Also I didn't have wireless and I didn't have an external hd so getting things from point a to b was a lot more work.

This time I ordered the computer and had two weeks to think about it and get mentally prepared for the transition (Change, eeek!) and I do have wireless and the external and an old computer that still works so I don't have to get everything over all at once. Which means less stress and much easier to just enjoy the fast shiny.

I'll have to remember that for next time, which hopefully will be years away.

But for right now, Squeeee! New toy!

    Tech help
So I took my laptop to Vividcon. Sometime during the second day there it stopped recognising wireless connections. (not that the one in our room was strong enough to be useful but it stopped seeing it as an option to connect at all.)

I got home and hooked up everything here again.

My laptop now doesn't acknowledge/give me the option to connect wirelessly to my router.

I don't think it's a problem with my router -- when I open the view available connections, it shows up with an active sign -- just under preferred connections and not in the upper available connections box. Also when I went in to check to see if maybe the settings on it had got changed and it seems to have lost the data encryption setting I had been using (now it only gives me WEP or off instead of the three or so other options it had including the one I had it set to.)

So something's got fricked up somewhere. Also, I tried to do a system restore to my settings before I went to VVC and my computer refuses to do it.

I'm currently on via ethernet cord, but the reason I got the wireless in the first place is that the cord no longer stays firmly in the computer and keeps disconnecting (like ten or more times in the last few minutes as I made the mistake of shifting minisculely in my chair.) so this is a less than ideal situation.

I've pretty much reached the limits of my technical knowhow. Hence this post. Help?

    Back from Vividcon...
Had a complete and absolute blast. I have roughly a gazillion posts on my flist to get through so the long detailed VVC post will need to wait. But in the meantime, here's my premiere vid.

    Sick Cycle Carousel
    Fandom: Star Wars
    Song by: Lifehouse
    Format: wmv
    Length: 4:28
    Size: approx 35 megs

Summary: To break the cycle sometimes you need to let go.

Vidding notes: Star Wars is my very first fandom (I fell in love with the saga when I was ten and TESB came out) I've been wanting to do this vid since 1999 -- long before all the source I needed existed and years before I learned to vid. This isn't everything I loved in the movies, but it is a look at part of the story that I've always been impressed with.

You can dl the vid from my vid page here. Or watch it on imeem here.

    Vacation all I ever wanted
So am officially on vacation now. Spent a good part of the day out running lots of errands and grabbing last minute things for the trip to VVC tomorrow (Gleee!) including getting American money (and boy is that less painful now than it was a few years ago.) and finding something to wear to Club Vivid. Yes, this is leaving things to the last moment. Welcome to my life.

I had wanted to get maybe a new pair of sandals but after running the other errands, I just didn't have the energy. I don't actually like clothes or shoe shopping so I only do it when I absolutely have to, which explains the last minute thing.

But got what I needed and just need to pack now and then tomorrow I'm on a plane to Vividcon. Yay!

I'm looking forward to the con even more now because really, I just want to submerge myself in the best part of fandom and just ignore the whole boldthrough lj mess for a few days.

My feelings on LJ/6A's clarification )

But I'm not going to dwell on that for the next few days. I'm taking a vacation from this as well as work. I'm going to submerge myself in watching vids, talking about vids and being fannish with a bunch of like minded people.

    Current Mood: Musing
